Practice the sound, not only the notes
Etude’s practice room is shaped for these details: etudes, sound control, and quiet repetition. If you only pass the notes, the piece is memorized but not heard.
- Play one note with several weights and listen to the difference.
- Take the phrase slowly so the rise and fall of the line is clear.
- Use less pedal so the hands stay responsible for the sound.
- After the correction, return the same phrase to the tempo of the piece.
From the etude into the piece
Sound control is not a separate drill to add later. The same care should sit inside this week’s repertoire. When the sound finds its place, speed finds a safer place too.
